* vinales - the 1st of may in the pineapple plantation

vinales - red soil, pinapple plantations, caves, mountains, palm trees and extremly skinny horses. we met a polish soldier who said that he had friends all over the world so we could get in touch if we get in any kind of trouble. i suppose it is good to know people like him :) we are staying with increadibly nice senores (after a nasty havana senora this comes as a great relief). they are serving a deliscious langosta for dinner, but before they do so they close all the doors and windows! we are quite surprised but we are soon to find out that beacause langosta is imported it is illegal in casas particulares and they are afraid that a passerby might let the police know what we are eating and they might get in trouble! what a bizzare place! our senora tells us a bit about the life in cuba and what they can get for the national pesos and what they buy for the CUC (convertible pesos), which they are lucky to have coz they rent rooms to the tourists. if you dont have any source of CUC it is difficult to buy the basic things like shampoo or even soap.
we go for a walk to the caves and one the way we meet a guy on whose field one of the caves is located. he sells us some pinaple juice from his juice and cigars stall and we chat away for a while.
today cuba celebrates the 1st of may - the workers day. last night there were shows on the main plaza and today a parade (too early in the morning for us to drag ourselves from beds for...). in the afternoon streets fill out with drunk and tipsy celebrants.
